Waajeed‘s second release from his
Electric Street Orchestra enclave,
“The Natives” EP, is out now.

Featuring four all new tracks
focused around themes of
gentrification, exploitation & rebuilding -
the set is a strong message
both thematically & sonically
in Jeedo’s resurgence & innovations upon
traditional Detroit techno & the city itself.

This is a journey led by Jeedo’s Electric Street Orchestra to his native land, Detroit City.

The Natives: It was created in direct defense to the assault on Detroit City. The uprooting
of it’s original citizens is fastly becoming the norm, as the population has plunged
by 25 percent over the last decade. The Natives is meant to celebrate all the pioneers,
revolutionaries, Moms and Pops that somehow get last in the media’s coverage of newly imported
“do gooders”. We celebrate those who have continuously fought to defend the honor and dignity
of this great city.

Serpents: According the Bible’s Book of Genesis, the serpent is a symbol of evil who appears in
the Garden of Eden to tempt Eve. The serpent is portrayed as a deceptive creature or trickster with ill
intent. We’ve all encountered numerous snakes in life, however this metaphor can also be applied
to the cities ongoing issue of land-grabbing by numerous corporations with empty promises to build farms.

Reconstruct: This is the quiet after the storm, cleansing the palette for rebirth. A new beginning,
one with hope and great promise. It was used as a sonic bed for the theatrical trailer of the award
winning documentary “Detropia”.

Today marks the debut of our second
original FRSH SLCTS film,
as well as our first time
directing a proper music video.

Again working with our man Coultrain,
this time the task at hand
was the mysterious-yet-sweet album cut, “A Gem Iza Jewel,”
for the first in our trio of
interpretative videos from his
current LP, Jungle Mumbo Jumbo.

For this initial piece,
we focused on themes of mysticism,
the magic of women,
& the illusion of ownership,
through a performance piece done
in just three shots using only two actors.

The short was graciously premiered
this morning by URB Magazine,
who had this to say of it:

Magic indeed. The video is steeped in the history and texture of vintage ‘trick films’ that exist as the backbone of early film history. The video masterfully weaves an enchanting and thought provoking conversation using the historical vision of folks like Georges Méliès, the Lumière Brothers, and Harry Houdini with some of etherial air of the current soul movement. There is a strange feeling of self-discovery not only in the viewer’s interaction with the piece, but also within the performance contained within. Perfectly capturing the mood of Coultrain’s arrangements and haunting vocals, it is the perfect ‘pledge’ before he reveals the ‘turn’ in the second video of the series.

Incredibly spot on,
if we do humbly say so ourselves.
