Following up on last year’s successful major label debut,
today Mayer Hawthorne released
a free EP’s worth of remixes from said How Do You Do.
And while the whole six-track project is worth checking for -
the hands-down winner of the batch, for our money,
is DaM-FunK‘s re-working of
the Snoop Dogg-assisted, “Can’t Stop.”
For his “G-Mix” of the track,
DaM takes the soul ballad style of the original
(which itself was a clear album highlight)
& gives it an all-around boost -
maintaining the classic R&B group, finger snap tempo
of the O.G. & adding (of course) the Funk to it,
complimenting it w/ a perfect,
“Strawberry Letter 23″-esque twinkling synth line
that takes the song to a new place altogether.
Add this one to a list of previous show-stealing remixes
for Baron Zen, Ariel Pink,
Nite Jewel, Cubic Zirconia & others,
& I think its safe to say that D-F
ranks among the top class of Remix producers of our day.
A&R’s, please (continue to) take note.
