To put it bluntly – Portland isn’t a city that’s kind to rap music.
With the police department’s oft misguided Metro Gang Task Force
shutting down rap-oriented venues & DJ parties left and right,
and few to none real break-out success stories from the scene here,
trying to “make it” in rap and living here
can feel like a constant uphill climb.
One thought of how to overcome this,
which we first experimented with
through TxE sampling local indie bands,
was cross-genre collaboration -
since local bands rarely had as much trouble
garnering not only a sustainable local following,
but often times national media coverage as well.
Flashback to a few years ago,
when one of our favorite local producers, Stewart Villain
told us that he was going to put out an album of him rapping.
We were hesitant, to say the least,
….but then we heard it.
Sharp-witted, brash, no holds barred,
and yet still delivered with an in-the-pocket flow,
Stewie has quickly rose in the ranks of our
favorite MC’s in the city which each verse
& guest spot he’s turned in.
Today, we’re excited to release a new single
from the 23 year old talent,
which finds Stewie carrying on the cross-genre experiment
by teaming up with Magic Fades -
another standout in new Portland acts,
who, along w/ Shy Girls are leading a new movement
of 90′s pop/R&B-inspired indie music -
brought together by the STYLSS group.
Stewie & the Fades duo come together for
“Smoking/Trippy” – a pretty standard
Southern/substance-influenced rap track
but with its own unique sound choices
& lush arrangements sprinkled into the backdrop.

Update 11/23: Now included is the new video for “Smoking / Trippy,”
directed by Noah Porter, which debuted today.
