ALBUM PREVIEW: Klipmode presents… devonwho – Funraiser Vol. 1: Thumbtracks

After recently relocating from Portland to the new beat mecca, Los Angeles – Fresh Selects family member since day one, devonwho, is about to release his very first for-sale release. The project, entitled Funraiser Vol. 1: Thumbtracks, is the first in the series from the Klipmode collective – consisting of devon, Knxwl3dg3, Suzi Analogue and Mindesign. All of dev’s fellow Klipmodians appear on a track each on the album and will be releasing their own Funraiser volumes as well.

Thumbtracks collects 17 of dev’s instrumental excursions and sorts them all into one concise album ripe for the head nodders and space cadets alike. Included below are full-length previews of three Thumbtracks – “interwho’d,” “wineflew” and the Suzi Analogue-assisted, “sageburnsredux.” I’ve also included an exclusive download of the non-album non-thumbtrack, “lovefunk duex” – one of my personal favorites from the set that somehow didn’t manage to make the final cut of the album.

Funraiser Vol. 1: Thumbtracks will be available as a digital purchase this Tuesday through the Klipmode site and will be sold in limited quantities on CD as well. Also, if you’re in L.A. be sure to catch dev and the full Klipmode squad rocking live at the Breaking Atoms at the Grand Star Jazz Club on August 11th.

Quick preview of the upcoming free download compilation from Weekend Beats alumni and Animal Kingdom leader, J1. The Starship 27 compilation is a self-described “beat odyssey” featuring all new/exclusives tracks from the likes of Black Spade, Proh Mic, dam-funk, Computer Jay, devonwho, Ras_G, Dibia$e, Snowman Jack, House Shoes and more.

The compilation will be available for download starting this Tuesday – but in the meantime you can download two FRESHclusive leaks from devonwho and J. Bizness below. I’ve also included two of the mini-video trailers that they’ve put up so far, featuring dam-funk and Ras_G. You can check out the rest of the trailers at Culture King, who will also be hosting the download for the compilation this Tuesday.

FRESHclusive: Ragen Fykes – With Love (Unreleased & Unmixed)

Hot off the heels of her debut single – Ragen Fykes, one half of M64 with producer Ohmega Watts, has blessed us with a free download mini-EP to mark the occasion. The single, “Rhythm Of The Drum” b/w “In The Pocket,” came out as both a limited edition 7″ and digital single this past Tuesday, courtesy of Record Breakin Music. This release is especially significant to me, as not only are Ragen & Ohmega two of my favorite artists, but this marks the first time a song that was first exclusive to the site (“Rhythm Of The Drum” was posted back in September), being picked up and officially released by a label. A few other FRESHclusives have recently been picked up by different labels as well – so look out for more news on that later. But big ups to DJ Junior of Record Breakin for believing in the cause and please go out and support the single.

But as for today, what we have is a little gift from Ragen, With Love. The three track mini-EP features rough mixes of two unreleased solo tracks – “In Love,” produced by Othello & “Love Life,” produced by devonwho – as well as another M64 track I leaked last year, “Helium,” in case you missed it then.

WEEKEND BEATS #2: devonwho – WaVES

For the second installment of my new Weekend Beats series, I’ve got the latest from the homie (and possibly the #1 FS commenter), devonwho. This latest offering, the WaVES EP, mainly consists of some recent highlights from his ever-changing MySpace player, but he also threw in some all new exclusives as well. Included in the EP are five instrumentals, a track each with both singer/Fresh Kept Secret gradute, Suzi Analogue (who also did the artwork), and also one of the nicest MC’s currently residing in Portland, Theory Hazit, and also a white label remix of Frank N Dank’s “Shut It Down.”

FRESH KEPT SECRET: Suzi Analogue World. Excerpts 1-9

For the latest installment in the Fresh Kept Secrets series, I present to for your consideration, another figure I seeing doing big things in the near future: Suzi Analogue. Suzi is a Philadelphia-based singer, writer & producer who is making moves worldwide, through not only being signed to the Amsterdam-based label, Dopeness Galore, but also a future release on Japan’s Jazzy Sport. Along with her own solo releases, she also has upcoming collaborations with artists such as Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, Frank Nitty (of Frank N Dank), Ras_G, Onra, Noni Limar, Melodee, Sterile Action Figures, Ragen Fykes, Knowledge, Devon, Swingkid, Portformat, and Cerebal Vortex.

As an introduction to Suzi, or a furthering for those already up on game, we have World. Excerpts 1-9 – a sampler of sorts of some of Ms. Analogue’s upcoming projects. Included in the album line-ups are her vocal projects, Lights On, The S Files and her instrumental project (under the name Suzilla), BEDBOOM. And while most of the tracks included in the sampler are self-produced, Suzi also gets some help from some similarly forward-thinking beatmakers, Knxwl3dg3, Mindesign, and Devon (who we’ll be hearing more from very soon – just a heads up).

For more on the Excerpts, Suzi left these words from her press release with her initial transmission: “Like a true sound scientist, Suzi Analogue has compiled nine recent excerpts created during her experiences in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Tokyo respectively. The project blends style, arrangement, and a passion to love the world around her with a clear honesty and without boundaries. Unafraid to mix grime with softer sounds, the intent of Excerpts is to open a window into her world to come.”

FRESH SELECTS RADIO #1

Today marks the debut of my new podcast, simply titled Fresh Selects Radio. Even though this is the first episode, it feels like the second in a way, because its more or less a follow-up to the Loose Joints mixtape I put together last fall. Just like that, its a collection showcasing both new and unreleased tracks from some of my favorite artists, some projects I’ll be working on in the near future, artists you should be on the lookout for, and more. I’ve also thrown in a few tracks that have been previously been posted on the site that you might’ve missed. But unlike the Loose Joints .zip, this podcast is one single track, which freed me up and allowed me to include some super-exclusives that I know I couldn’t post as individual downloads.

Originally, I was going to host the podcast like a radio show – but instead I decided to let the music speak for itself. If you feel like it sounds unfinished, I left the instrumental interludes I was going to talk over in the mix, so feel free to fill in the blanks yourself. However, if people get on some bullshit and rip some of the exclusives from the mix and re-post them as downloads on other sites, then next time out I’ll have to talk all over all the good shit – so just behave yourselves & act right and I’ll be able to keep bringing you the latest & greatest without any problems.

I might still write up some liner notes to go along with the tracks, but it might be a while. We’ll see what the feedback & response is like first (*cough*leaveacomment!*cough) and then take it from there. So yeah, lemme know what you think.
