Myself & my trusted resident DJ, Doc Adam,
have collaborated w/ Los Angeles-based clothing line, Twelve Bar
to bring you a special two-part Fresh Selects Retrospective mix.

This first installment of The Porch Sessions,
is meant to be a time capsule of sorts –
an audible freeze frame of the first 12 months of music posted on Fresh Selects.
I wanted to compile everything from the site’s first year
just to kind of sum it all up,
put a period at the end of the sentence,
& cement the foundation for us to build on for the next steps.
It can also serve as a starter kit
for anyone who found out about the site after the fact,
as well as a thank you to everyone that’s been down since day one.

I went through all of the posts from the site’s first year
& selected some of my personal favorite tracks,
plus all of the ones that garnered the most response.
Almost all of the songs included in the mix were exclusives
released or premiered thru the site
& they all played a part in shaping the sound & style that I had been going for.
To convey the full progression as it unfolded,
I wanted to put them all in one mix
(which actually ended up being two separate, hour-long mixes
because there was just too much music)
& let them play in chronological order.

Since mixing songs in order of release,
& not by BPM/tempo/mood, etc.
basically goes against all the most basic rules of making a mixtape -
I knew I had to get the very best to make it happen right.
Enter Doc Adam (no pause).
Plus his apartment has The Porch, so it was a no-brainer.

Included are some kind words from the even kinder people @ Twelve Bar,
who presented the mix & co-premiered it on their site today as well,
+ the tracklisting w/ links to all the original posts
so you can get the full versions & back stories on all of the songs.
I’m still in the process of updating some of the older posts
from the first version of the site,
so if you find any dead links just leave a comment & I’ll fix it.

Free download of the one-track, hour-long mix can be found below,
& be on the look out for Part 2 of The Porch Sessions RTRSPCTV coming soon.

There is a lot we could say about FRSH SLCTS – the Portland-based digital label and multimedia platform that has been providing you with the best in hip-hop, soul and cutting-edge music since 2008. All of it would be good. But the main thrust is right there in their name, albeit without the vowels as is their style. Seemingly everything they do is fresh. Freshly presented, freshly considered, freshly packaged, and freshly curated. And that is the second part right there. Because the “selects” element of the name is also key, as they hand-pick artists and songs with the educated touch of a musical magician, never failing to bring out the very best available. And so when the chance came to bring you the exclusive FRSH SLCTS Retrospective mix, an anthology of some of their favorite songs from their early years, we jumped at it.

In both honor of hip-hop legend GURU‘s passing on this day last year,
& also commemoration of the first official release from TaRaach in quite some time -
LA Series #9 from All City‘s 10-part series of 10″ split-EPs,
we have “Lemonade (Suite Jezuz Original).”

The track is a lost outtake from the recently EP,
shared with Mochilla co-founder Coleman on the flipside,
on which we get introduced to a whole new sound from Raach -
one based in almost entirely live instruments,
combining a more organic/garage band sound
with the same signature slop & swing we’ve come to know him for,
& the outcome bringing us somewhere between Basquiat’s Gray band
& Madlib’s YNQ excursions,
but yet still fully Turled – as he himself puts it on the EP’s tracklisting.

Consider these tracks just one step in a forward direction for TaRaach,
actually – maybe more of an apartment stoop or a porch than a step.
One meant to sit back & vibe on – some open-air conversation starting music.

& with that said,
we present you with this unreleased cut – straight from the patio:
the full-length original, but alas – unclearable, vocal version of “Lemonade,”
(Raach sent it to me labelled as “LEMONADE (ORIGINAL – SUITE JEZUZ)”
in an otherwise blank e-mail, so we’ll go with that -
although the album version’s subtitle of “(Guru Mix)”
might make more sense for this one – but since when has sense mattered?)
in pristine 320 kbps sound – ready to be added in all the laptop DJ’s rotations.

Also included are both promo leaks that All City have put out from the EP so far,
including the retail version of “Lemonade” &
Coleman’s “Earthquakes” – a synthy tambourine jangler of a tune,
which seems to expand upon the posthumous percussive funk of Dilla’s “Love Movin.”

& of course,
R.I.P. to Keith “GURU” Elam – one of hip-hop’s eternal voices.
For the latest on how you can help out,
please visit FuckSolar.com
for some topnotch reporting on some of the tricknology regarding his death &
how his legacy has been handled since.
Because after all -
Lemonade was a popular drink,
& it still is.

Today marks the debut of my new podcast, simply titled Fresh Selects Radio. Even though this is the first episode, it feels like the second in a way, because its more or less a follow-up to the Loose Joints mixtape I put together last fall. Just like that, its a collection showcasing both new and unreleased tracks from some of my favorite artists, some projects I’ll be working on in the near future, artists you should be on the lookout for, and more. I’ve also thrown in a few tracks that have been previously been posted on the site that you might’ve missed. But unlike the Loose Joints .zip, this podcast is one single track, which freed me up and allowed me to include some super-exclusives that I know I couldn’t post as individual downloads.
<lb>
Originally, I was going to host the podcast like a radio show – but instead I decided to let the music speak for itself. If you feel like it sounds unfinished, I left the instrumental interludes I was going to talk over in the mix, so feel free to fill in the blanks yourself. However, if people get on some bullshit and rip some of the exclusives from the mix and re-post them as downloads on other sites, then next time out I’ll have to talk all over all the good shit – so just behave yourselves & act right and I’ll be able to keep bringing you the latest & greatest without any problems.
<lb>
I might still write up some liner notes to go along with the tracks, but it might be a while. We’ll see what the feedback & response is like first (*cough*leaveacomment!*cough) and then take it from there. So yeah, lemme know what you think. In the meantime, the tracklisting with the artists’ MySpace links is listed here and then you can download or stream the mix below.

Hot off the heels of releasing two critically acclaimed albums in 2008, Rhode Island native/L.A. resident, Shawn Jackson, is already going for it in 2009 by releasing two new singles in the last month.
<lb>
The most recent one being the 12″ EP and digital single of my personal favorites from the First Of All album – the “grown man business” anthem, “Maan Up!”. The track features Fresh Selects favorite, TaRaach holding it down on the beat, scratches & a guest verse, joined by Big Tone on the hook. The 12″ also features another album highlight, “Fix Ya Face” produced by Jack Sample Pros, and the vinyl-exclusive C-side, “Here We Go Again” featuring Co$$ & produced by Exile. Being that the song is vinyl-only, I have the exclusive free download of “Here We Go Again” for you guys below. Before that, there’s also full-length streams of “Fix Ya Face” and “Maan Up!,” as well as the exclusive rough version of the track’s instrumental, taken straight from a Raach Box beat CD.
<lb>
Also out now is Shawn Jackson’s collaboration with UK-based producer, Ben Grymm, the five-track 7″ EP, “Back In My World.” You can find a free download of one of those five songs, “BloodSweatNTears” at the bottom of the post.
<lb>
Sorry, folks – no bonus tracks this time around. I’m not really sure if anyone was really checking them before, so I’m trying decide if they’re still worth the effort. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

Shawn Jackson feat. TaRaach & Big Tone “Maan Up!” (prod. TaRaach)

TaRaach “Maan Up! (Instrumental)” (beat CD version)

Shawn Jackson “Fix Ya Face” (prod. Fly Jack & Chordz of Jack Sample Pros)

Just when all the over-saturation and post-mortem bandwagoners almost had me putting all my favorite Dilla shit back on the shelf – in comes the official torchbearer, House Shoes, to re-ignite the spark. His forthcoming mixtape (in the truest sense of the word), The King James Version, is a smoke-filled trip through the used crates of the late beat pioneer that reminds us all (because some of you apparently need it) just why James Yancey is the G.O.A.T.
<lb>
With all the bullshit posthumous mixtapes that came out with Dilla’s name & likeness unfairly attached to it (as previously discussed here), this is one of the few that does his legacy justice. It’ll have you pulling out all your favorite Dilla CD’s, records, and illegally downloaded beat CD’s (you know you got em) again with a newfound respect for his craftsmanship with each secret revealed.
<lb>
The King James Version is the first of an on-going series that will be released through a limited run of CD’s sold directly by Shoes himself, starting on January 9th. Below is a free download of the first track of the five that will appear on the CD, as previously heard on his Shoes House podcast. For a (much) better write-up of KJV, check out Hubert’s Frying In Vein blog.
<lb>
Also, stick around after the jump for three bonus tracks that showcase House Shoes’ own, often slept-on, production skills with Detroit classics he produced for Finale, Elzhi, and Decompoze.
No, it’s not really mixed – its just a .zip full of tracks that I’ve been feeling lately, and/or been meaning to post about. I’m gonna be gone for the next couple of days so I wanted to put this up to hold you guys over until I come back. But if all goes well, I should be coming back with a bang. We’ll see…. but until then, bump this.

<lb>

1. Hi-Res – This World (Thrilla Music Group)
Hi-Res is an up-and-coming producer from Portland, down with the Thrilla crew. I wanted this mixtape to have a kind of spacey, futuristic feel to it – so I thought this would would make the perfect intro. This is off Hi-Res’ free instrumental album, Sittin’ Up In My Room. Highly recommended.
<lb>
2. Black Spade x 88-Keys & Kanye West – Stay Up! (Viagra) (Stoney Rock Remix) (CD-R)
Exclusive white label remix from Black Spade AKA Stoney Rock. Bigs up to the homie Ced of Hawthorne Headhunters for this one. I haaaate that corny Borat line at the end of the first verse – makes me cringe every time. LOL!
<lb>
3. Mike Slott feat. DistantStarr – Boxed In (All City)
This is a track the homie Distant from MAGr did with Mike Slott of Heralds Of Change. Great late night driving music.
<lb>
4. Georgia Anne Muldrow & Dudley Perkins – Shine On (prod. Black Milk) (Mello Music Group)
Big ups to Mello for sending this through. This one’s actually for sale so if you dig it, support it. I dig this – no comment on its subject matter though….
<lb>
5. Devon – Hold Up Zelda (Thrilla Music Group)
As far as this new era of beat shit goes, Devon’s definitely a name to remember. Actually, my very first post was about Devon. Be sure to check that if you haven’t already.
<lb>
6. SA-RA Creative Partners – All In The Kitchen (CD-R)
This is another exclusive Shafiq from SA-RA hooked up last week. Goofy, off-the-wall shit.. but still dope.
<lb>
7. Black Spade feat. Coultrain – A Lil Taste (CD-R)
This starts the Dilla dedication section of the mix. All of the next 4 tracks sample or reference Dilla in someway. But yeah, this is an old Black Spade track I got off his MySpace about a year or two ago.
<lb>
8. Finale – Ice (prod. DJ Final) (CD-R)
Finale is one of my favorite MC’s right now – his album is gonna be crazy. More on that soon… in the meantime, this is a track he did with Norway producer, Final, that references the Jaylib track, “Ice.”
<lb>
9. Dill Clinton (TaRaach vs. The G.O.A.T.) – LiveWire (Lovelution Prosper)
This is from Runnin 4 Precedent, a top-secret TaRaach project thats been in the work for years now. Word is the election campaign is coming soon… stay tuned for more on that.
<lb>
10. Knowledge – Relief (CD-R)
Knowledge is another name to remember, he’s been putting in a lot of work lately. I first heard him on Invincible’s track, “Ropes” off of ShapeShifters but he’s done so much since then it’s hard to keep up. Look out for more from him & Devon on Fresh Selects coming soon.
<lb>
11. Ras_G & The Afrikan Space Program – Clair Huxtable (Brainfeeder)
Dope new track Ras just hooked me up with the other day to close out the Dilla set. On this, Ras flips the sample to one of my favorite Slum Village tracks, in tribute to everyone’s MILF crush, Clair Huxtable. Ras explained to me this is for “the Clair after the kids left, the Clair Cliff saw before Rudy knocked on the door.” LOL
<lb>
12. Waajeed – Can’t You Feel It (Instrumental) (Bling47)
This beat seems a little random on here – but it’s one of my favorites right now, so fuck it. Coultrain actually recorded a song to this for the forthcoming PPP Mixtape – so look out for that. As far as the beat goes – all my indie rock heads should be able to spot what Waajeed chopped up on this. Don’t get it twisted (hint) – there are samples galore in indie rock music.
<lb>
13. TaRaach feat. Mia Simone – Benjamins (prod. AmDex) (CD-R)
Man… I almost have too many TaRaach exclusives – I might need to do a mixtape with all of these someday. In the meantime, here’s an oldie-but-goodie from 2003 that he recorded in Germany with AmDex of the Vinyl Junkies.
<lb>
14. Noni Limar – Monogamy (prod. Black L.A.) (CD-R)
Noni is someone I’m really looking forward to hearing more from. You may remember her from C.R.A.C.’s “Buy Me Lunch” (which she also directed the video for). I got this off of her MySpace, hopefully she doesn’t get mad at me for using it :)
<lb>
15. Finale – Run It Back (prod. Rashid Hadee) (CD-R)
Another one from Finale. He raps with such intensity on this one – you can’t help but feel it.
<lb>
16. DaveNotti – Get Real (prod. DaiN) (Thrilla Music Group)
Notti & Dain were 2 of the first artists signed to the Thrilla crew – and this track is a good example why. Dave’s really beasting on this one – 5,000+ bars (I’m rounding up) and no hook. DaiN killed this beat too. Both of them have a lot more heat still in store.
<lb>
17. Kissey Asplund & DistantStarr – Car Ride (To The Future) (prod. Jay Scarlett) (CD-R)
Another exclusive that Distant hooked up. This is off his upcoming project w/ Swedish singer, Kissey Asplund. Can’t wait till that one comes out.
<lb>
18. Troubleman feat. Steve Spacek – Without You (Waajeed’s Flash Gordon Remix) (Bling47)
Long story behind this one – but basically Troubleman’s label put out this remix without paying Waajeed. Not a good move. But it’s a dope track and it fit the feel of the mix, so fuck it – don’t buy it, get it right here instead.
<lb>
19. Fatima – Wildchild (prod. VeeBeeO) (CD-R)
Fatima’s another singer I’m expecting big things from. You might remember her from the Hygher Baby post I did. I really like how she came off on this one – her voice is definitely that of an old soul, despite her age. I dig the sparseness and simplicity in the beat too.
<lb>
20. Donel Smokes – Got Me High (Bridgetown Steel)
I’ll be an honest – I don’t know much about Donel Smokes – except that he’s in Bridgetown Steel, rapped on Exile’s Dirty Science album and a track that got left off of Blu’s Below The Heavens. I love this beat though – I don’t even smoke, but when this shit comes on?? Pass some of that over here.
<lb>
21. Devon – Sleep Tight (Thrilla Music Group)
Damn… all that smoking made me tired. A nice sleepy beat from Devon to close things out.

Another FRSH SLCTS exclusive – this time coming straight from the leader of The Lovelution & chief CRAChole himself, TaRaach (note: “capital R-ruh” & no more apostrophe). And this time it’s a double-header.
<lb>
First up is a quick batch of beats that Raach whipped up for a recent set at The Low End Theory, a DJ night/producer showcase in L.A. He calls this batch The Raach Box/Stock/Opts.. Personal highlights from the set include “Sky High,” a stackin-chips monk sole (“chipmunk soul” is so ’03) joint; “Moppin’ It Up” a nobody-else-would-touch-this flip of a legendary B***le; and last but certainly not least, the hard-hitting spazz-out anthem “Vince Vaughn!” as the grand finale. The title for that last track will make more sense when you hear the song in it’s fully-realized form on the upcoming project from TaRaach & KonPhlict (aka Konnie Ross) of the Detroit collective, Almighty Dreadnaughtz (who you may know from their lead solo member, Guilty Simpson).
<lb>
“Let it knock!” (c) TaRaach Obama

TaRaach – The Raach/Box/Stock/Opts

<lb>
And as for a taste of the aforementioned TaRaach & Konphlict project, Raach also laced me with two joints to let you in on what they’ve been up to with that. Between both tracks we’ve got both sides of the coin presented – one song dedicated to all the socialites & hustlers, and the other, an ode to all the smokers out there. See if you can guess which is which… ha.
<lb>
Both tracks are produced by TaRaach for The Lovelution Prosper with raps being handled by Konphlict. But the album will feature both Raach gettin on the mic and Phlict behind the boards as well, so these two tracks are just a small taste of whats in store. Stay tuned for more on the project’s release coming soon.
